Gorky Automobile Plant was founded in 1932 and has become the center of Russian metal engineering.
Since the time of its foundation the plant has manufactured over 16 million cars and trucks of 150 models and modifications. All the other car-makers of the country (VAZ, KAMAZ, UAZ, ZAZ, PAZ, etc.) have been founded and equipped with the active partici pation of GAZ specialists.
Since 2005 Gorky Automobile Plant is a member of GAZ Group - the largest car-making holding that comprises four bus-producing plants (PAZ, GolAZ, KAvZ, LiAZ), Kanash Car Units Plant, Saransk Dump Truck Plant, Yaroslavl plants producing fuel and diesel instruments, as well as Automobile Plant Ural JSC, TvEx JSC, Bryansky Arsenal JSC, Chelyabinsk Road-Building Machines Plant JSC, Zavolzh'e Prime Movers Plant, Arzamas Metal Engineering Plant, Barnaultransmach Holding Company JSC, their servicing, distributing and supplying subsidiaries.
Among the most famousm models ever produced by Gorky Automobile Plant there is legendary GAZ-66 truck, Gaz-52 and GAZ-53 trucks, «Emka», «Pobeda», «Volga» and «Chaika» cars. «Chaika» GAZ-13 and «Volga» GAZ-21 cars have been awarded Grand-Prix at the International Car Exhibition in Brussels. GAZ cars are known all over the world and have always been in demand in many countries of the world.
Gorky Automobile Plant still occupies a special place in Russian car-making industry. It is the only plant in Russia that produces the widest range of cars and trucks, special machinery and components. Moreover, it also manufactures over 700 items of other goods - cast iron and steel bars and forgings, bars of non-ferrous metal and various tools.
GAZ has a 5 percent share of cars production, 55.6 percent share of trucks production and 47.9 percent суshare of bus production in Russia. The annual output is over 230,000 autmobiles, including 53.4 percent of trucks, 17.2 percent of buses, 26.7 percent of cars. The annual turnover amounts to approximately 60 billion rubles.
Gorky Automobile Plant traditionally supplies the agricultural sector with trucks, the army — with reliable all-wheel-drive vehicles, small and mediumsize business — with light «GAZelle» and «Sobol» vans, as well as produces Volga medium-class cars.
Besides, it has started production of mulgti-purpose «Tiger» cars for law enforcement bodies. The company expands production of special purpose vehicles: municipal and road vehicles, auto-repair works and movable labs, ambulances and money collector vans, tank trucks and fuellers.
GAZ cars and trucks are well-known and very popular in many countries of the world. The company has exported about 250,000 vehicles of various models only for the recent 20 years.
The company has a developed dealers' net; now GAZ products are offered not only in Russia and CIS but also in 30 other countries. New approaches to distribution process, improvement of servicing, setting uo new dealer centers that meet the companies requirements as to the level of equipment and firm style enabled the plant to increase the sales including sales for export. The success in the export distribution has been duly appreciated by the RF Ministry of Economic Development and Trade which for two years in a run awarded GAZ Russian Cars Trade House the title The Best Exporter for the achievements in the foreign trade.
GAZ is the first Russian company that in 2003 introduced the new system of operations organization adopted in the largest world car-makers.
It resulted at the increase of the daily output, of the production quality, decrease of the production cost and the amount of the unfinished production. The working conditions and the production culture have got up to a higher level. The reason for this is the commitment of the staff to the main principles of GAZ busines philosophy: think of the customer, the working staff is the main asset, consistent improvement of the production, attention to the production premises.
The quality system adopted by GAZ is certified in conformity with the national and international standards ISO 9002 by experts of SATR-Fund (Russia) and TUV Management Service GmbH (Germany). Gorky Automobile Plant has ISO 9001:2000 Certificate for design and development, body assembly and cars, trucks and bus distribution as well as for manufacture and distribution of castings of non-ferrous metals and alloys.
In 2006 the foolowing investment projects were being implemented: further modernization and increase in production of light commercial vans, production of «Volga» car with new interior and «Daimler-Chrysler» engine, increase in the production of «Valday» truck for cities and «Tiger» multi-purpose vehicle, EURO-2 and EURO-3 standards were introduced, ecological programs were being realized.
Now the company is engaged in the development of «GAZelle» and «Sobol» vans of the second generation; developent of cars production will be ensured due to purchasing a license for production of models on the basis of Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus platform.
Gorky Automobile Plant partici pates in the implementation of the important national projects: it executes an order of the Health Ministry of the RF for supply of the country's medical institutions with ambulances within the Health National Project, participates in the renovation of the transport fleet of the Internal Ministry of the RF supplying cars to Emergency platoons and Special Purpose Police platoons.
Gorky Automobile Plant is one of the largest plants in the city which depends upon it to a large extent, and is connected with many companies of the Volga region due to the partici pation in the common production cycle.
