The Company Profile and the Main Types of Products
In 1956 the future engine plant was started as an affiliate of Gorky automobile plant targeted on bicycle production, later it was restructured for spare parts production and non-ferrous casting. Since 1958 the plant is specialised in production of internal combustion engines. Currently OAO Zavolzhsky Motorny Zavod is producing four-cylinder engines for domestic medium class cars Volga, RAF mini-buses, UAZ, ERAZ, GAZ-3302 GAZel, a small capacity truck, and eight- cylinder internal combustion engine for medium capacity trucks type GAZ-3307, GAZ-6611 off-country trucks, PAZ-3205 Pavlovo plant buses and Kurgan plant buses. The production facilities is designed for an annual output of 450 000 engines.

Since 1996 the plant is fulfilling a programme of a mass production of a new generation petrol engine — ZMZ-406.10, a four-stroke with four-valve gas distribution system, two overhead camshafts, central positioned spark plugs and with a complex micro-processor fuel injection and ignition control in line with the best world engine production experience. The engines are designed for installation on medium class cars of Volga type and small capacity trucks of GAZel type. To-day OAO ZMZ is putting a great effort to develop a company Diesel engine based on ZMZ-406.10, a produced testing sample is of 2 litre volume and of 100-130 h.p. power and double fuel system engines (binary) for GAZ-3307 and GAZ-31029. OAO Zavolzhsky Motorny Zavod is among the top 5 of the world major producers of plain bearings and a steel-aluminium strip. The plant delivers the plain bearings for ZMZ, VAZ, UAZ, Moskvitch and Tavria engines. One of the vital operation area is non-ferrous casting. The die casting method is used for production of some 100 of casting items, the chill casting method outputs up to 360 of casting items of various types of complexity.
